About us
A brief history
Dacorum Women's Aid was established in 1975 by a small group of committed volunteers who believed strongly that no woman or child should experience or be subjected to any form of domestic violence and through the ethos of 'women helping women' we are still going strong.
Sanctuary House is managed by a charitable, non-profit making organisation called Dacorum Women's Aid.
An Introduction to our refuge:
Our refuge in Dacorum offers support, help and advice but more importantly, somewhere safe to stay for you and your children. This temporary accommodation offers a breathing space where decisions can be made free from pressure and fear. You can stay in the refuge whether or not you have children. Our six bedroom detached refuge is a large ordinary house that is airy, pleasant, comfortable and friendly. There is a manager, a support worker and many volunteers to help you consider your options.
We have a number of daytime volunteers who support the refuge by providing a range of activities to help build positive experiences for our families. These include; yoga, reflexology, children's activities, street dancing, etc.
There is also a very dedicated working committee (also volunteers) who are responsible for the fundraising, upkeep and maintenance of the house.
Dacorum facts:
Hemel Hempstead is the largest town in the borough.
Dacorum is the largest borough in Hertfordshire with a population of around 140,000.
It is approx. 30 miles from London and has a direct railway line to Euston (approx 30 mins).
Dacorum Borough Council covers Kings Langley, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Tring and surrounding villages.
What makes us different:
Sanctuary House is unique in that the majority of people you will come into contact with are volunteers, who give up their time and lend their individual expertise to make the refuge a welcoming and happy place.
We strive to make the atmosphere comfortable so that you very quickly get to know other residents, staff and the volunteers ensuring a friendly and relaxed environment for all.
Because of our close network, you can have a say in a lot of what happens at the refuge, from where we go on children's days out to the colour of the playroom. Everyone has a voice at Sanctuary House! |
